Johnny vs. Amber will show perspectives from both The Pirates of the Caribbean actor, 58, and the Aquaman actress, 35. Along with Depp and Heard’s point of view, the series will show their lawyers as well. Video and audio footage from over the years will be shown.
Nick Hornby and Fran Baker will be serving as executive producers. Hornby said, “Through the tapes, home videos, and text messages shown in court, these films give viewers a rare and important insight into a marriage that went tragically wrong and to better understand the hugely important issue of domestic violence.”
Charlotte Reid, VP commissioning for entertainment at Discovery explained what the docuseries is about and what it will touch on.
“The story of what happened between Johnny and Amber continues to be hugely divisive, between fans and the public at large.”
“We set out to make a documentary that would explore the story from each of their perspectives, so the viewer can go beyond the headlines, understand who they are, and decide who they should believe in this complex human story.
“We think it’s a compelling contemporary story on truth and lies that we hope will open up a conversation with our viewers on Discovery Plus.”
Can they not leave #JohnnyDepp alone, he who has been abused and has proven it among a great deal of evidence the media refuses to publish when it is public? I hope these documentaries will be the target of a lot of public complaints, a bad hearing and a libel complaint! pic.twitter.com/2zEztPL6xk

The bitter divorce began when Heard filed back in 2016 after alleged abuse from Depp. Heard eventually got a restraining order against the actor as the abuse supposedly escalated. Depp denied these claims. After a tumultuous legal battle, the divorce was granted with Heard getting a 7 million settlement.
The battle continued when Depp sued Heard for defamation. Heard wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post, claiming to be a survivor of domestic abuse. Heard never mentioned Depp by name, but it was implied. This led to Depp’s lawyer releasing a statement, denying the abuse.
“Mr. Depp never abused Ms. Heard. Her allegations against him were false when they were made in 2016. They were part of an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Ms. Heard and advance her career.”
Heard’s representative responded to Depp’s lawyer’s statement to People Magazine.
“This frivolous action is just the latest of Johnny Depp’s repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard. She will not be silenced. Mr. Depp’s actions prove he is unable to accept the truth of his ongoing abusive behavior. But while he appears hell-bent on achieving self-destruction, we will prevail in defeating this groundless lawsuit and ending the continued vile harassment of my client by Mr. Depp and his legal team.”
This snowballed out of control. In 2020, the actor sued The Sun after calling him a “wife-beater.” As a result, Depp lost the case in November. Not only did Depp lose the case, but he lost the role of Gilbert Grindelwald in the Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts. Johnny vs. Amber will debut sometime at the end of the year on Discovery+.
