Amanda Gorman’s New Poem Helps Raise Money for the IRC

Amanda Gorman, poet, and activist came out with a new poem called “New Day’s Lyric.” This beautiful poem is to reflect upon 2021 and welcome 2022.

With this poem, Gorman put a short clip on her platform reciting her poem to raise money for the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic. IRC helps provide health care, learning for children, and help communities be self-reliant. They also seek to address inequalities facing women and girls. Instagram has already pledged $50,000.

When creating the video, Gorman had help with Kajal as director and The Genius Club as the producer. She was filmed in a theater dressed in a white one-shoulder dress. In her caption, Gorman explains, “I wrote ‘A New Day’s Lyric’ both to celebrate the new year and honor both the hurt and humanity of the last one.”

Gorman explains to Vanity Fair what inspired her to create this poem. In her interview, she said,” I’m looking forward to working with Instagram because part of what inspired me to write this New Year’s poem was thinking about the narratives and the stories that I’ve seen shared throughout the past two years, whether it’s reconciling with grief, loss, social change, climate change.”

Gorman recites, “We are learning, that though we weren’t ready for this, we have been readied by it.”

Not only has she created this poem, but she also delivered “The Hill We Climb” at the presidential inauguration. She published a collection of poems called “Call Us What We Carry.” Gorman also recited “Chorus of Captains” filmed for the Super Bowl pregame ceremony.
