Ridley Scott has tapped Vanessa Kirby to star in his upcoming historical drama, Kitbag, slated to begin production this spring.

Vanessa Kirby will be replacing Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer in Kitbag, Apple’s historical drama. Comer cited “scheduling conflicts” as her reason for parting ways. Kirby is portraying Empress Josephine opposite Joaquin Phoenix, who is portraying Napoleon. The Joker actor teamed up with Scott in Gladiator, the historical action drama. Over two decades have gone by since his collaboration with Scott. The breakthrough role earned Phoenix numerous accolades, including a Critics Choice Movie Award and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Kirby is fresh off an Oscar nomination for her gut-wrenching role as Martha in the Netflix film, Pieces of a Woman. The film follows Martha and Sean (Shia LaBeouf), a Boston couple who are about to become parents. Their lives are forever changed when their home birth ends in tragedy. This breakthrough role landed Kirby nominations at the Emmys, Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and SAG Awards. The actress is also known for her role as Princess Margaret in the first and second seasons of Netflix’s The Crown. Kirby won a BAFTA for her portrayal of Princess Margaret.

Kitbag is written by David Scarpa, Scott’s collaborator from the 2017 crime-thriller, All the Money in the World. According to a press release, Kitbag will explore “Bonaparte’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor through the lens of his addictive and often volatile relationship with the Empress.” Fans are already growing impatient over a Kirby and Phoenix collaboration.

Kitbag will undoubtedly take viewers on an interesting ride. Vanessa Kirby and Joaquin Phoenix will begin production starring as the Empress Josephine and Napoleon this spring. In the meantime, fans can watch Pieces of a Woman on Netflix.
