The New KIMI Trailer Starring Zoë Kravitz Is Here
The official trailer for KIMI has been released. HBO Max shared the crime-thriller directed by Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh.
As fans anxiously await Zoë Kravitz’s portrayal as Catwoman opposite Robert Pattinson as Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the actress has another film out next month: KIMI. The Big Little Lies alum teamed up with Steven Soderbergh to create a memorable thriller about the dangers of technology. Soderbergh worked with screenwriter David Koepp, who has penned some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, including Jurassic Park and Spider-Man.
Soderbergh revealed how the project came about in an interview with IGN. He states:
“Some years ago when David Koepp was living in London, we had drinks when I was over there. And he said, ‘Oh, have you read about this story, this murder case where they think they got it recorded on an Alexa, and they’re trying to use it as part of the litigation, the criminal case?’ And the impression that everybody got was that Amazon wasn’t being very helpful. And so David said, ‘I’m thinking about an idea of a voice analytics person who works for one of these companies that has a listening device. And they think they hear something, and the company really wants her to drop it.’”
KIMI was made during the pandemic, and viewers will undoubtedly see the parallels in the film. Kravitz’s character, Angela Childs, is agoraphobic, rarely leaving her house. Kravitz plays a voice stream interpreter who overhears a murder on a recording she was analyzing. Childs reacts in horror and decides she has to overcome her fear of going out and must gather the courage to leave her house in order to get the woman help.
KIMI is a fictitious device similar to our modern-day Alexa or Siri. The technology is incredibly sensitive, picking up on anything one says in the room. Soderbergh reveals his thoughts on these devices, saying, “I’m just sort of stunned that people allow these devices in their homes at all. The idea that it is only ‘activated’ when you speak to it and activated is just ridiculous to me. I mean, the idea of just having no privacy.” The director hopes his film, KIMI answers this question: “Is it worth it to have one of these things in your home?”
They’re always listening. Always.
