Fink, after several close calls with the law, finds herself back in Boston with her mom who she (dis)affectionately refers to as “smother,” while she tries to get sober and avoid jail time for the havoc she wreaked while under the influence.

Fink begins work at her local grocery store, attempts to reconnect with old friends — one of whom happens to be marrying Fink’s ex — and bonds with her AA sponsor who patiently helps her with her recovery. “Just try to be a person,” says Fink’s sponsor. When she suggests to Fink that she can accomplish this by making her bed every day, Fink looks at her dubiously and wonders whether she’s speaking metaphorically.

And of course, we get a sneak peek of the romance that’s to come. But surely a relationship is not ideal during the initial stages of recovery, right?

Single Drunk Female seemingly has everything one would want in a dramedy. Its main character is personable, funny, and realistically flawed; it’s got interesting and complex romantic and platonic relationships, and it approaches substance abuse from a humorous yet illuminating lens.
