After a Lyme disease diagnosis and struggles with her mental health, Hadid decided to reveal an honest portrait of her life to her Instagram followers. In doing so, she displayed remarkable vulnerability.

Social media is filled with people’s best moments, which Hadid said made her want to undo the artificial nature of posts and display a different side of herself.

In her interview with the Journal, she stated the purpose of the photos was to, “make sure that anybody that was feeling that way knew it was OK to feel that way. Even though on Instagram things look so beautiful, at the end of the day, we are all cut from the same cloth. I felt like it was just good for me to be able to speak my truth and at some point I wasn’t able to post nice pretty pictures anymore. I was over it.”

She also discussed her highly lauded style in the piece. She puts together her own outfits and has forgone a stylist for the past two years. This caused her anxiety to spike due to the paparazzi who photograph her outfits for people to judge, but Hadid said she learned to let go of other people’s opinions; her happiness and comfort that her style brings her are the priority.
