Glitter Magazine has always stood for diversity since its conception in 2006. Founded by a Black woman who is a global publisher, entrepreneur, a Black Women in Media Award winner, and a Times Up Critical, Hollywood Critics Association, and International Press Academy member, Nikki Fowler had a mission when it came to launching the glossy magazine founded at the time on 5000+ newsstands and retailers, “You can sit with us.” So many magazines have had the motto, “You can’t sit with us,” even using the popular tag phrase on social media platforms as well as having it as a real-life motto in their content which excluded people of color, specifically Black creators from their content for decades.
2020 marked a year of change as we saw brands like Teen Vogue with their problematic leadership and Conde Nast’s Vogue having to reckon with their own muddy past of not even hiring one Black photographer over their vast 100+ plus history. Thanks to celebrities like Beyonce, change is coming as influential icons and the masses demand a shift to a more inclusive experience across publishing, retail brands, and corporate America. Glitter has given people of color access to a popular mainstream channel and has helped to shape the careers of many underrepresented names in the entertainment industry over the past 15+ years.
Glitter has championed itself as a publication that was one of the first mainstream magazines to interview stars like Trevor Jackson, Coco Jones, and the first and only magazine to give a mainstream cover to actress China Anne McClain. We also featured the amazing designer Kristian Lorén in one of our earlier photoshoots as well as a cover story with Riele Downs, and she has gone on to present at Fashion Week, design for American Girl as well as dress Leslie Jones for the MTV Movie Awards among other influential celebrities. There is still so much work to do and so many amazing creators to feature for more seats at the table.
Glitter has conducted thousands of interviews globally including but not limited to:
Denzel Washington, Lee Pace, Gal Gadot, Zendaya, Alexandra Shipp, Hailee Steinfeld, Kristen Bell, Jackie Tohn, Alfre Woodard, Enrico Casarosa, Yodit Tewolde, Garrett Hedlund, Michael B. Jordan, Kimora Lee Simmons, Diggy Simmons, Toni Trucks, Angela Simmons, Coco Jones, Lucy Hale, Janel Parrish, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, Sasha Pieterse, Ariana Grande, Normani, Demi Lovato, Mary Holland, Kat McNamara, Dove Cameron, Peyton List, Bella Thorne, Darren Barnett, China Anne McClain, Chandler Kinney, Drew Ray Tanner, Martins Imhangbe, Cody Simpson, Chloe x Halle, Karlie Kloss, Avan Jogia, Olivia Holt, Jordan Fisher, Nigel Barker, Elle Macpherson, Heather McDonald, Jeannie Mai, and Ross Lynch to name a few.
That said, this February to kick off Black History Month, we are continuing to highlight the amazing talent that oftentimes still goes overlooked and we want to hear from you on your favs via nominations below.
