Word broke out Thursday afternoon that the Suspiria actress would be joining the Sony-produced film as the first female superhero in a new spinoff film in the Spider-verse. Many Marvel geeks remember the brief appearance of Felicia Hardy, otherwise known as “Black Cat,” in The Amazing Spiderman 2 where she was Norman Osborne’s former assistant. She was set to have a film of her own which would’ve made her the first female superhero to have a movie in Marvel’s Spider-verse, however, due to the box office failure of The Amazing Spiderman 2, plans were canceled.

Madame Web first crawled onto the scene in the 210th issue of The Amazing Spider-man comics. The superhero was always portrayed as a paralyzed, blind, telepathic, and clairvoyant mutant elderly woman. As far as we know, Johnson is none of those things, so it’ll be interesting to see what she does with the role and Dakota Johnson fans are ready for it.

It was in September 2019 that Sony announced Madame Web would be receiving her own film with Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama as the writers. Sony and Marvel will be entering production on a high note after the smashing success of Spiderman: No Way Home which hit $1.7 billion at the box office worldwide.

Johnson received praise for her role as Nina in the Netflix film The Lost Daughter alongside Oscar-winner Olivia Coleman. There is no set release date for the Madame Web film, but until then, you can see Dakota in the upcoming film Persuasion.
