Insecure creator and writer Issa Rae is moving on to a new project. She will be starring alongside Nicole Kidman and Cynthia Erivo in the new women-led anthropology series, Roar.

The show will be centered on what it’s like to be a woman in today’s world and is set to air on April 15 on Apple TV+.

The series will also star Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie), Alison Brie (Community), Betty Gilpin, Meera Syal, Fivel Stewart, and Kara Hayward. It is based on Cecilia Ahern’s book, also titled Roar.

Much like the book, the series is a collection of 8 episodes, highlighting dilemmas, struggles, and experiences of all types of women. The Apple TV+ exclusive will feature “a unique blend of magical realism“ while also showcasing “the dilemmas of ordinary women.” Roar, the book and series, is exciting content created for women by women and starring women that will give insight into the journey of womanhood and give new, creative perspectives to the everyday woman that exists today.

Because of the magical realism and futuristic elements of the show, the series has been categorized as a dark comedy. Roar has been describes as “wise and weighty,” as it features stories like the woman who gains success and fame, which slowly detaches her from reality. Another story highlights a woman who discovers her lover’s secrets and her future becomes uncertain. Other fables cover topics such as, romance, family, abandonment, and discrimination.
