Two Real-Life Power Couples Make Oscars History
The 94th annual Academy Awards has love in the air. The nominations for this year’s awards were released on Tuesday, February 8, where two real-life power couples made Oscars history.
Congratulations are in order for Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, as well as Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons. These couples made history for being nominated across four major acting categories. Bardem landed a Best Actor nod for his role as Desi Arnaz in Being the Ricardos. His wife, Penélope, was nominated for Best Actress for her role as Janis in Parallel Mothers. She was nominated alongside Bardem’s co-star and on-screen wife, Nicole Kidman, for her portrayal as the legendary Lucille Ball.

In addition to this talented couple, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons are both first-time nominees for the roles in the Netflix hit, The Power of the Dog. Dunst is nominated for Best Supporting Actress; her fiancé is nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Whether the duo wins or loses, Dunst and Plemons would love to work together again. The actress revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, “We actually talked to [Power of the Dog producer] Tanya Seghatchian about what Jesse and I should do next. We have some ideas, and Jesse and I definitely want to do another project. He’s my favorite actor to work with.”

A Dunst x Plemons and Cruz x Bardem are not the first time couples have been nominated at the Oscars. Although it is a first for two couples in the same year, previous partners would include the late Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams in 2006, and Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in 2009.
