America Ferrera joins Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling for Greta Gerwig’s next flick.

The film has been in the works for some time, but the addition of Ferrera and Robbie was the key component to get production started. Gerwig wrote the script with her partner Noah Baumbach.

Margot Robbie is set to play the titular role of Barbie, with Ryan Gosling being set to play Barbie’s love interest, Ken. Ferrera’s character has yet to be revealed. The plot details are being kept under wraps, no doubt to build anticipation for the film.

The ensemble cast and crew have had quite a bit of award show acclaim, with both Gerwig (Little Women) and Baumbach (Marriage Story) receiving Academy Award nominations in 2019 for Best Picture.

Gerwig was one of seven women to have been nominated for Best Director. Robbie and Gosling have each been nominated for Academy Awards for acting twice in their careers.

On Gerwig being chosen to sit in the director’s seat, she stated, “People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ’Oh, well, maybe I don’t.'”

Gerwig’s Lady Bird was critically acclaimed for being a witty and vulnerable look into the life of a Sacramento teen in the early 2000s.

The Barbie movie is being produced collaboratively by Warner Brothers, Mattel, and LuckyChap Entertainment. Filming is set to start in London soon, with the movie being slated for a 2023 release.
