The D.A.R.E. organization has brazenly condemned HBO’s hit series Euphoria, claiming the show’s existence is ‘unfortunate.’ Zendaya promptly opposed this narrative, defending the intentions behind the series.

HBO’s Euphoria, starring Zendaya, has captivated viewers and infiltrated social media. Despite the show’s sensationalism, executives have issued trigger warnings for content involving substance addiction, sex/nudity, and irresponsible alcohol use. Zendaya utilized her Instagram to reinforce the weight of the topics depicted on the show, warning fans to assess their mental state before watching.

A D.A.R.E. representative spoke to the organization’s perspective of the series: “It is unfortunate that HBO, social media, television program reviewers, and paid advertising have chosen to refer to the show as ‘groundbreaking,’ rather than recognizing the potential negative consequences on school-age children who today face unparalleled risks and mental health challenges.” The organization isn’t suggesting that the show suspend indefinitely; they are, however, suggesting to collaborate [with HBO] to allow for the show to move forward in a more positive light.

While Zendaya hasn’t shied away from the seriousness surrounding the show’s topics, she’s remained adamant in her defense of it. The actress spoke specifically to D.A.R.E.’s allegations last week, stating, “The feeling behind Euphoria, or whatever we have always been trying to do with it, is to hopefully help people feel a little bit less alone in their experience and their pain… And maybe feel like they’re not the only one going through or dealing with what they’re dealing with.” Zendaya has remained confident in the show’s ability to facilitate conversations on these subjects and to have a healing impact on its audience.

Euphoria executives have not shared any plans to team up with D.A.R.E. Fans have been over the moon about the series’ renewal for a third season. You can watch Euphoria on HBO max.
