Stephan James To Star As Jean-Michel Basquiat In New Limited Series
Stephan James will be portraying the legendary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in an upcoming limited series. The actor is also set to produce the series as well.
On February 24, it was revealed that James and Shamier Anderson would be developing a limited series via their Bay Mills Studios banner with Boat Rocker Studios about Basquiat. The series is set in 1980s New York and will focus on Basquiat’s beginnings as an obscure graffiti artist to the legendary neo-expressionist painter fans have come to admire. In addition, the series will draw upon Basquiat’s friendship with iconic pop artist, Andy Warhol.

This will not be the first time an adaptation has been done on the American artist. In 1996, Julian Schnabel made his directorial debut for the film, Basquiat with Jeffrey Wright portraying the iconic artist. The film also included the late David Bowie as Andy Warhol, Hole frontwoman Courtney Love, and actors Willem Dafoe, Dennis Hopper, Benicio del Toro, Gary Oldman, Parker Posey, Sam Rockwell, and Christopher Walken.

If Beale Street Could Talk star Stephan James uploaded an image of himself next to Basquiat, where he captioned the photo, “One of a kind in a full house” followed with the hashtag, #ImTheNewJeanMichel.
James revealed in a statement that “Jean-Michel is an artist I have long revered, and someone who has greatly influenced my work over the years. To embody such a revolutionary, whose influence in the modern era of pop culture is simply immeasurable, will simply be one of the greatest honors of my career.”
We cannot be more excited to see Stephan James crush this new role. Fans should follow Stephan James on Instagram for more film updates.
