Apple TV+ has recently given the green light for Sam Esmail’s (Mr. Robot) Metropolis series. Esmail will take on the role of director, writer, and executive producer for the Metropolis film adaptation.

The series is inspired by a 1927 Fritz Lang film with the same name. The film is described as, “…a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master.” This iconic film has been influential to future sci-fi films, such as Blade Runner (1982) and Brazil (1985).
While there is still more information to come about the upcoming sci-fi series, we know that Esmail has had his eye on Metropolis for a long time. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The project first went into development at UCP in late 2016, when Esmail was a hot commodity on the heels of Mr. Robot becoming a cult favorite on USA Network.”

With another confirmed show in the works, Esmail is booked and busy. Sam is writing and directing on Netflix’s Leave the World Behind. He’s an executive producer on Starz’s new project Gaslit as well as EP for Peacock’s The Resort and Angelyne. Esmail is also working on the Battlestar Galactica reboot for Peacock as well as an alt-history drama, UCP’s The American Throne.
While the Metropolis TV adaptation hasn’t divulged casting nor a release date, we do know from Esmail’s previous work, that this show will be a hit.
