Zoë Kravitz is receiving major praise for her role as Catwoman in the Robert Pattinson led-film The Batman. However, after an initial interview with The Observer, Kravitz revealed that the comments about being too “urban” for Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, are untrue.

Kravitz recently made a statement on her Instagram story regarding the rumors. She started off, “Ok – let’s talk about clickbait bad journalism; I was NOT told I was too urban to play Catwoman in The Dark Knight. It would have made NO sense for me to even be considered for that role at that time. I wanted to AUDITION for a small part in the film and was told (I do not know who said this, but this is how it was worded to me) that they were not going ‘urban’ on the part. This is something I heard a lot ten years ago — it was a very different time.”

In her Instagram story, Kravitz also noted, “I do not mention this to point any fingers or make anyone seem racist, namely Chris Nolan, the film’s producers or anyone on the casting team because I truly do not believe anyone meant any harm. I was simply giving an example of what it was like to be a woman of color in this industry at that time . . . let’s all calm down – as well as fact check before we write things that are untrue.”

In her initial interview with The Observer, Kravitz detailed her history as she grew more comfortable in her skin. The actress revealed that at one point in time, she was insecure about her hair, “relaxing it, putting chemicals in it, plucking [her] eyebrows really thin.” She then went on to add, “I was uncomfortable with my blackness. It took me a long time to not only accept it but to love it and want to scream it from the rooftops.”

Amidst the microaggressions that came with being a biracial woman in Hollywood, Kravitz made sure to recognize her parents’ (Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz) support. Kravitz shared how growing up with parents who “broke down boundaries in a lot of ways” helped her become more comfortable in her skin.

The Batman has debuted at #1 in the box office with a $134 million revenue. Check out Kravitz’s supporting role in the film, now in theaters.
