Grimes and Elon Musk Welcome New Second Baby
Canadian singer Grimes accidentally revealed that she and Elon Musk have a second child in a new cover story for Vanity Fair on Thursday. Their daughter, who they call Y, was born via surrogate in December 2021 and they have kept her a secret ever since. However, when journalist Devin Gordon showed up at the 33-year-old songwriter’s home for their initial interview, the sound of a baby crying upstairs gave Y’s existence away.

After the birth of their son X Æ A-12 — nicknamed X — in 2020, Grimes stated that she knew they wanted more children together. But after a traumatic pregnancy riddled with complications, the singer mentions that she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to safely carry another child.
In truth, there was even a point in her pregnancy when she thought she was dying. “Like, I hemorrhaged,” she told Vanity Fair, “It was scary.”
Grimes rose to fame as a fiercely independent solo artist championed by the Internet—then she fell in love with Elon Musk. She speaks to V.F. about internet criticism, her new album, and the secret arrival of her second child, “Exa Dark Sideræl Musk.”

Grimes explains further that because their second child was carried by a surrogate amid the pandemic, it wasn’t difficult for the parents to keep her hidden from the public. However, after Y unintentionally revealed herself that Tuesday afternoon, Grimes decided it was time to share more details about her secret daughter.
“Her full name is Exa Dark Sideræl Musk,” she wrote in a text. It’s pronounced “sigh-deer-ee-el,” according to the musician’s additional voice memo. Exa refers to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS; Dark refers to “the unknown.” Sideræl is “a more elven” spelling of sidereal, she explained, and a tribute to her favorite Lord of The Rings character Galadriel.

Grimes shared that she expects Y to eventually grow tired of her name and when that time comes, the mother of two will be there to help her pick a new one. In fact, she’s worried her daughter’s current name might be slightly boring. “I was fighting for Odysseus Musk,” she wrote to Vanity Fair, “A girl named Odysseus is my dream.”
With Musk, X, and Y by her side, Grimes continued that she hopes her family can one day settle on Mars. While the concept might seem far-fetched, stranger things have happened. Until then, keep an eye out for what the singer has in store while she’s still earthbound.
