Canadian pop star, Shawn Mendes used his platform for good when he spoke out against anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation in Florida.

The “Wonder” singer tweeted to his 26 million followers urging the people of Florida to contact their senators to fight this controversial bill. He went on to tweet, “Florida, call your senators!”

The “Don’t Say Gay” bill also known as “Parental Rights in Education” (HB 1557) bans the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools. This piece of legislation was passed in the Republican majority senate. It is expected to be signed by Governor DeSantis, who has expressed his support for the bill many times. The bill will go into effect on July 1.

Many celebrities like Kerry Washington and Kate Mckinnon shared their disdain for the hateful new law. Fans are proud of the Pickering native for taking the initiative to speak out.

Florida residents can make a difference by contacting their senators here.
