Ralph Lauren Changes the Narrative of the Ivy League Style
A unique collaboration between Ralph Lauren and two prestigious Historically Black Colleges and Universities has been released. Spellman and Morehouse have chosen two well-known institutions to participate in a new campaign that highlights the importance of the Black American dream. In the past, Lauren has had many allegations of creating an American dream only for white people, not minorities, but in 2020, his perspective changed.
According to The Washington Post, after the racial reckoning in 2020, the company gathered virtually in small groups for a conversation about the events taking place. The purpose of the discussion was to create a safe and honest space to share thoughts and concerns. “How are you doing?” Lauren asked Black employee James Jeter. “‘Great. But you know, I’m not sure that this is going to be my future,’” replied Jeter, which Lauren recalled during an interview last week. “I said, ‘What do you mean by that?'” Lauren stated and recalled Jeter’s response: “‘Well, you know, I don’t know if this is the path. Is this a company that’s going to be all White? … What’s the story with this company?'”
After this day, Lauren sought to make his collaboration prosper and to represent his employees and customers who support him and his brand. In the same article from The Washington Post, Lauren noted that he was unaware of the classic ivy league style for HBCUs, but only the style present at white schools. He knew nothing about the fashion, greek life, and aesthetic they possessed. He created this campaign to show his newfound support and love for the culture.

The clothing line is intended to mock the fashion style of HBCUs during the 1920s. The fashion line is exclusively for Spelman and Morehouse students and includes the classic white cotton attire with pearls, the Morehouse leatherman jacket, and crew neck sweaters for each school. The collection ranges from $20- $2500. In partnership with the school, Ralph Lauren used faculty, students, and alumni to execute their vision.
