After revealing that she was not invited despite being the lead in the best picture nominee, West Side Story, Rachel Zegler has been invited to present at the Oscars ceremony.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences offered the invitation after a social media uproar at the apparent snub of the actress. Although she was not guaranteed an invitation due to not being nominated personally, many felt that her presence was implied because of her star role in a film nominated for best picture. Her costar, Ariana DeBose, received a nomination for supporting actress in the Steven Spielberg film. Spielberg was also nominated for best director.

West Side Story is one of the most critically-acclaimed Latinx-led films of the year and is nominated for seven Academy Awards, the third most nominations at this year’s ceremony.

Zegler addressed the controversy on Twitter, writing, “my goodness, folks!! appreciate all the support, i really really do. we live in such unprecedented times, and a lot of work behind the scenes goes into making movie magic happen. that goes for film productions (like the one I am so lucky to be currently shooting in london)…and awards shows alike. let’s all just respect the process and i’ll get off my phone x R.”

Zegler had previously revealed on Instagram that she had not received an invitation to this year’s ceremony. She replied to a fan sharing excitement over her potential Oscar’s outfit, “i’m not invited so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel.”

We can see Rachel Zegler present at the 94th Academy Awards, airing March 27 at 9 PM EST on ABC.
