Colson Baker, famously known as singer Machine Gun Kelly, becomes the newly titled prince of pop-punk through inspiration from his teenage angst. In Billboard’s most recent article, Kelly talks about his change from the genre of rap to pop-punk.

New photos of Kelly showcase the musician in neon suits, manicured nails, and iconic pink hair. Kelly rocks a stunning Dolce & Gabbana suit, Giuseppe Zanotti boots, Lillian Shalom necklace, The Great Frog, and Parts of Four rings. Billboard’s official Instagram account even posted a behind-the-scenes video of Kelly.

There’s a tight relationship between Kelly’s childhood and career. According to the 31-year-old musician, when Kelly goes back home to Cleveland, he’s not Kelly. He’s “the same scrappy teenager from 15 years ago, hustling mixtapes outside the mall.” In addition, Cleveland “is also the only place where he’ll let people get away with roasting him: for his love of the color pink, or his penchant for dressing like Edward Scissorhands.”

Outside of Cleveland, he’s the soulful and artistic musician that we know. His bride-to-be Megan Fox refers to Kelly as if he’s an actual prince from a Gothic book. Her “achingly beautiful boy” who’s “magical and haunted.” According to Kelly, he struggled to create credibility as this “odd, skinny white kid rapping alongside the likes of Waka Flocka Flame and entering ridiculous feuds with Eminem.” However, he wanted to create songs with a mixture of feel-good sounds and heavy lyrics with a dash of pop-punk.

And now, Kelly is receiving the recognition he deserves. Kelly’s father had kicked out his delinquent teenage son after high school. However, in 2020, his father complimented one of his tracks and even helped his prince of pop-punk son write his first song on the guitar. Kelly states that “it was the ultimate success. In that moment, when he acknowledged my music and we bonded over a song, it gave me the richest memory I’ll ever have.”

Kelly has certainly made a name and career for himself. Check out the Billboard photoshoot to see the new prince of pop-punk.
