The Linda Lindas consists of members Bela Salazar, Eloise Wong, Lucia de la Garza, and Mila de la Garza, who identify as Asian-American and Latino. The group shot to superstardom after someone filmed their performance of “Racist, Sexist Boy.”

“Racist, Sexist Boy” is an edgy, punk-rock tune that emerged after a painful experience for the band’s drummer, Mila de la Garza. She recalled, “A boy came up to me in my class and said that his dad told him to stay away from Chinese people. After I told him that I was Chinese, he backed away from me.”

The 10-track record is the perfect mixture of adolescent angst and female empowerment. In an interview with Pitchfork, the band revealed that they gravitated toward punk music because it is “anything you want it to be.”

The Linda Lindas are way more than a viral Internet sensation. Their talent is unmatched, as the members vary in age from 11-17. The pre-teen and teen punk rockers are already changing the world for women in music.

Karen O, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman, is inspired by their work. She states, as an Asian-American herself, “The presence of the Linda Lindas really speaks to me because I feel like a lot of us grew up kind of reserved and in the shadow, not in the limelight making music, which is this kind of mainline into self-confidence. It’s so inspiring, and so surprising, to see these young girls having that — it took me probably 21 years of stuffing down all these feelings when it finally exploded in a cathartic way when I was onstage. I could’ve used that when I was 12.”

Congratulations to The Linda Lindas on a solid debut record. We cannot be more excited to see the band continue to evolve as musicians in the punk-rock genre. Growing Up is available to stream on all major music platforms.
