After a whirlwind year that included a blockbuster superhero film and an Oscar nomination, Andrew Garfield is taking time off from acting.

In an interview, Garfield stated, “I need to recalibrate and reconsider what I want to do next and who I want to be and just be a bit of a person for a while. Because as you know, that is a washing machine, that awards season. I need to just be a bit ordinary for a while.”

He recently starred in “Tick, Tick… Boom” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” the former of which earned him his second Oscar nomination. He was nominated for his first Oscar in 2016 for “Hacksaw Ridge.” His other recent credits include “Spiderman: No Way Home” as Peter Parker, reprising his role in “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

He later clarified his comments, stating that it is only for a short period. He elaborated, “People make a story out of nothing. I’ve been loving the work I’ve been doing but also, you know, I need to take a month or so…I’m not retiring!”

While discussing his return to the small screen, he stated, “I remember getting that first TV gig and knowing that I was going to get paid for acting in a way that I could pay my rent and I could have the occasional one nice meal a month…I remember going out with my friends that night and just kind of celebrating…I was so happy.”

Garfield currently stars in “Under the Banner of Heaven” as a Mormon detective trying to solve the murder of a young mother (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her child. “Under the Banner of Heaven” airs on FX and can be streamed on Hulu.
