Netflix announced the green light for season two of the South Korean Netflix series Squid Game with a short teaser featuring the close-up of an eye of a gigantic animatronic doll. Netflix announced the green light for season two of the South Korean Netflix series Squid Game with a short teaser featuring the close-up of an eye of a gigantic animatronic doll. Squid Game is a dystopian drama where individuals who are in serious debt play deadly games in hopes to win the enormous cash prize. The first season of the series struck audiences with vivid depictions of the deadly games and the classic theme of survival of the fittest, keeping them on the edge of their seats.

Netflix also released a message from the director, writer, and executive producer of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, with the details of the new season. He wrote in his letter that the lead character Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) would return as well as the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). “The man in the suit with ddakji might be back,” he added, referring to the man who sent invitations to the contestants (Gong Yoo).

Additionally, he revealed that the boyfriend of Younghee, the giant killer doll who leads the game “Red light Green light” will be introduced in season two. His name will be Cheol-Su, named after a character in a Korean fairy tale.

Dong-hyuk added, “It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director, and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.” Likewise, Squid Game quickly became Netflix’s most-watched series of all time after its release in September, crowning countless awards globally.

Although Dong-hyuk didn’t specify when the second season will be released, he estimated it will air sometime near the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024.
