Robb Elementary, the Uvalde, Texas school where 19 children and two teachers were killed on May 24, is set to be demolished, according to the city mayor.

During a Uvalde city council meeting, Mayor Don McLaughlin announced officials planned to raze the building. ““It’s my understanding and I had this discussion with the superintendent — that school will be demolished,” McLaughlin stated.

MacLaughlin did not project a date for the demolition but stated at the council meeting “You could never ask a child to go back or a teacher to go back to that school. Ever.”

MacLaughlin’s announcement followed a statement by DPS (Texas Department of Safety) director Steven McCraw, in which he referred to the shooting at Robb elementary as “an abject failure” and suggested that the commander “decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children.”

At a Texas state Senate hearing, McCraw commented on how the onsite commander made “terrible decisions.” He also suggested that the officers at the scene lacked sufficient training, wasting valuable time that could have saved many lives.

McCraw stated, “There is compelling evidence that the law enforcement response to the attack at Robb Elementary was an abject failure and antithetical to everything we’ve learned.”

Many have expressed deep anger at how the police reacted after the gunman entered Robb Elementary and began shooting.

“The officers had weapons; the children had none. The officers had body armor; the children had none. The officers had training, the subject had none. One hour, 14 minutes, and eight seconds – that is how long the children waited, and the teachers waited, in Room 111 to be rescued,” stated the DPS director.
