FDA Orders JUUL to Stop Selling E-Cigarettes in the U.S.

On Thursday, June 23, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a statement announcing that JUUL Labs must pull all products sold in the United States.

“Today, the U.S Food and Drug Administration issued marketing denial orders to JUUL Labs Inc. for all of their products currently marked in the United States,” writes the FDA. “The company must stop selling and distributing these products.”

JUUL Labs are best known for its electronic cigarette device called JUULs. They also sell different types of pods in various flavors. All pods contain nicotine.

According to JUUL Labs, their mission was “to transition their world’s billion adult smokers away from combustible cigarettes, eliminate their use, and combat underage usage of their products.” In reality, JUUL Labs are one of the many companies responsible for the vaping epidemic that plagues many of our teenagers and young adults today.

With the flavors JUUL manufactures and sells such as Pink Lemonade and Mango Nectar, it is not surprising that many young people get easily hooked to their products. In 2021, the CDC conducted a study that concluded that more than 2 million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes. More than 85% of them used flavored e-cigarettes.

Regarding the FDA’s decision, JUUL Labs have also released its own statement

“We respectfully disagree with the FDA’s findings and decision and continue to believe we have provided sufficient information and data based on high-quality research to address all issues raised by the agency,” states Joe Murillo, the Chief Regulatory Officer of JUUL Labs. “We believe that we appropriately characterized the toxicological profile of JUUL products meets the statutory standard of being ‘appropriate for the protection of the public health.’”

Because of FDA’s ruling, JUUL Labs are not allowed to sell or distribute its products. Effective today, any JUUL products in the market must be removed.
