South Korean girl group, Aespa delivered a speech at the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) on July 5. The group visited the U.N. General Assembly Hall in the New York City Headquarters.

Aespa delivered a speech titled “Next Generation to the Next Level” and performed their song “Next Level.” The theme for this year’s forum is “Building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

The girl group related this theme to their concept as a metaverse girl group. Among the four members (Giselle, Karina, Ningning, and Winter), Giselle was the spokesperson and started the speech by stating, “Our group Aespa uniquely moves between reality and virtual reality. We exist here in the real world, and four of our avatar members exist in the virtual world. Together, we are often called the metaverse girl group.

Giselle pointed out the lack of effort from the current generation in protecting sustainable development compared to the metaverse and virtual worlds. “People are paying more attention to creating the best possible metaverse world. It transcends many boundaries—reality and virtual reality, time and space, and genres and generations. As the metaverse accelerates, we have to ask the question: ‘Are we working just as hard to create the best possible real world?’” Giselle commented.

SM Entertainment shared photos of the Kpop group in the conference room. Following their speech, SM entertainment became the first K-pop entertainment agency to join the U.N. Global Compact (UNGC) and agreed to comply with the UNGC principles.

Aespa will release their second EP “Girls” on July 8.
