Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis is the Woman King. The actress will embody the role of Nanisca, the general of the Agojie military. According to the press release, the film will be inspired by true events and has drawn further inspiration from Dora Milaje in Black Panther. The Woman King follows Nanisca (Davis) and Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), an ambitious recruit, as they fight enemies who have enslaved their people and violated their honor.”

In order to prepare for such a powerful role, Davis took on rigorous training. She states of the process, “We started intensely a few months before shooting — four hours a day, five days a week. Weight training, sprinting, martial arts, and weaponry training for the machete.”

The part of Nanisca is truly the role of a lifetime and one she does not take for granted. Davis discussed the responsibility she felt she had to bring to the film, stating, “I’ve never had a role like this before. It’s transformative. And to be a producer on it, and to know that I had a hand in bringing it to fruition…. There’s always a vision you have for your career, but there are very few roles as an actress of color. Dark skin with a wide nose and big lips. I’m just gonna continue to say it. Those stories are extraordinarily limited.”

Gina Prince-Bythewood directs the film. Apart from Davis, The Woman King also features Sheila Atim, Masali Baduza, Jordan Bolger, John Boyega, Thando Dlomo, Angélique Kidjo, Jayme Lawson, Lashana Lynch, Jimmy Odukoya, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Zozibini Tunzi, Makgotso M, Siv Ngesi, and Adrienne Warren.

The Woman King will arrive in theaters on September 16. Be sure to watch the action-packed trailer below.
