Emilia Clarke previously revealed that in 2011 and 2013, she survived two brain aneurysms. Recently, she opened up that she had to excruciate portions of her brain to recover from aphasia; the consequences of the trauma her brain had gone through.

In 2019, the Game of Thrones actress previously wrote in her essay for the New Yorker that “In my worst moments, I wanted to pull the plug,” referring to her experience at the hospital. “I asked the medical staff to let me die. My job—my entire dream of what my life would be—centered on language, on communication. Without that, I was lost.”

On Sunday, July 17, the actress told BBC about the painful experience which led her to eliminate “quite a bit” of her brain that no longer functions. She underwent intense internal bleeding and strokes which left her no choice other than surgery. She expressed that “It was incredibly helpful to have Game of Thrones sweep me up and give me that purpose,” she added.

Mayo Clinic defines an aneurysm as “a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain” which occurs when the vessel is not strong enough to handle the blood pressure. The surgery left her with difficulties in remembering her own name for a time. The 35-year-old actress stated, “It’s remarkable that I am able to speak” considering the low recovery rate. Although Clarke is still recovering from the condition, she keeps herself busy with acting by continuing to star in shows and films.

Clarke is currently starring as Nina in Anton Chekhov’s production, The Seagull. Here at Glitter, we are so incredibly proud of Clarke’s achievement and bravery.
