The Criminal Minds Revival: What We Know

Paramount Plus/ CBS

Criminal Minds, an all-time favorite series, has announced its revival. The series will make its comeback with a 10-episode-long sixteenth season. With many of the original characters returning, we’ll get to see the beloved “mind hunters” in action.

Over 15 seasons, the series garnered millions of views, but in February 2020 it bid farewell. After the last episode aired, there were ongoing conversations behind the scenes regarding a potential reboot. Finally, Paramount+ recently confirmed the revival.

At various times, there wasn’t much hope for a reboot. Paget Brewster, the actress behind the iconic Emily Prentiss, tweeted last summer about it.

Eventually, things took a turn for the better. Brewster announced the confirmed revival on Twitter, responding to her earlier comments.

Brewster isn’t the only fan favorite returning to the series. Joe Mantegna, who plays David Rossi, gave us a sneak peek into the behind-the-scenes creation of the Criminal Minds revival.

Some original actors that we’re so excited to see in the return are Kirsten Vangsness (Penelope Garcia), Adam Rodriguez (Luke Alvez), A.J. Cook (Jennifer “JJ” Jareau), and Aisha Tyler (Dr. Tara Elizabeth Lewis). With all of these familiar faces, there’s no doubt that the Criminal Minds revival is going to be nostalgic.

Unfortunately, there is no mention of Spencer Reid (played by Matthew Gray Gubler) returning to the series. Known as the series’ genius, he will be gravely missed. Gubler has been on Criminal Minds since day one and has even directed some episodes, but he’s said that the Criminal Minds chapter of his life has ended.

Matthew Simmons, played by Daniel Henney, is also not returning as of right now. Henney is currently starring in The Wheel of Time, so his return is contingent upon both availability and willingness to return to the series.

The exact details of the revival aren’t all finalized, but we do know that production is expected to begin on August 21. With the return of so many characters, it’s safe to say that the general plot of the series will remain the same. Storylines should be carried over to season 16, picking up from where they left off. Some changes in the dynamic of the series are inevitable (mainly non-returning characters), but we don’t know how the gaps will be explained in the new season.

Fans are extremely excited to see Criminal Minds return and to find out what’s in store for the upcoming 10 episodes.

As the Criminal Minds revival grows closer to its release, we’ll have more answers regarding the series. Currently, both actors and audiences are looking forward to the new, thrilling, and ever-changing stories of criminal psychology. While fans await the arrival of the new season on Paramount+, seasons 1-15 can be streamed here.
