Becky G got candid on most aspects of her life and career in a new interview with Variety. The Latin sensation graced the cover of the publication with a nude-colored belted dress paired with her long flowing hair to complete the glamorous look.

Throughout the feature, Becky G discusses several events that have led to her liberation as a musician and a person. One of the leading forces was her music producer, who has fallen from grace after popstar Kesha’s alleged sexual misconduct accusations. Becky G faced her own legal battles with the producer but inevitably dropped them in fear that he would ruin her career.

Now, the “Baile Con Mi Ex” singer is living on her own terms as she states, “No one has the power to put me in a box…No one else should be the dictator of what I do with my body, how I use my voice or how I choose to express myself.”

This newfound growth has trickled down to her music career. Since her exceptional Coachella performance in April, in which she scored the sunset slot, the Latin phenom has not let up. Her album Esquemas features 14 tracks and ranges from dembow to reggaeton, which is something she says was not always the norm. Becky G mentions, “I think back to when it would’ve been an artist’s downfall to experiment with so many sounds on the same album because you’d get accused of not ‘knowing’ your sound or who you are as an artist.”

Becky G looks back on her trials and tribulations but understands she wouldn’t be where she is today without her humble beginnings. As a child, she had young parents who, unfortunately, faced financial hardship. This forced them to move into her grandparents’ garage and declare they were “homeless” on school forms. At a young age, she used hardship as her driving force as she simply thought, “OK, well, what do we do when we have nothing? We make something.”

It might’ve taken some time, but the Latin phenom has found her groove and is looking towards a future in the production world. She wants to “go into the producing side because as an actress you get stuck sometimes, seeing a lot of the same roles or just feeling like there could be so much more out there for us in the Latinx community,” She hopes to be a catalyst for her community since roles are scarce in the Latino community, “So if you can’t find them, if they don’t come your way, you’ve got to make them.”
