Reservation Dogs is a comedy series that features the lives of four Indigenous teenagers on reservations in Oklahoma. First introduced as ransackers, the teens aim to escape the cruel world that ended the life of their closest friend.

The coming-of-age series stars an all-Indigenous cast, with talented performances from Devery Jacobs, who plays Elora, the gang’s responsible member. D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai stars as Bear, who sees himself as the leader of his group of friends. Lane Factor plays a laid-back character, Cheese, while Paulina Alexis stars as Willie Jack, the tough tomboy of the group.

The critically acclaimed comedy has won the Peabody Award, two Independent Spirit Awards, and many accolades. According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), many critics have rated the series as the “Best of 2021”.

Sterlin Harjo, the creator of Reservation Dogs, has spoken publicly in regards to Native American stereotypes in the media. Harjo claims, “The Hollywood version of what a Native is has been very false.” His goal in creating the series was to tell a genuine, honest story that is accurate to the culture it aspires to portray.

The show reveals the hardships and inequalities that arise in Native American life. While some can relate to the Indigenous themes in the series, the comedy unites its audiences together, Native American or not. Reservation Dogs gives a platform for stories that are meant to be told but are underrepresented on mainstream television.

Reservation Dogs has proven to be one of a kind. Due to the show’s popularity, many fans yearn for more series’ featuring authentic representation on television.
