Bad Bunny Makes VMA History With New Performance and Honor
Latin sensation Bad Bunny has had quite a successful year, and things do not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. He made VMA history after giving an exceptional performance at Yankee Stadium, a stop on his “Bad Bunny World’s Hottest” tour.
After an introduction by the night’s Video Vanguard honoree Nicki Minaj, Bad Bunny opens the production by carrying out a bride-to-be. The wedding march music quickly dies down, and he begins his performance of “Tití Me Preguntó,” one of the hottest singles of his new album Un Verano Sin Ti.
Immediately he hits the audience with the first few lines, “Tití me preguntó si tengo mucha’ novia,’ mucha’ novia’” (“Ey, auntie, asked me if I have a lot of girlfriends, a lot of girlfriends”), and it is hard not to get up a dance to the dembow beat as fans echo the lyrics after him. For the next four minutes, Bad Bunny is surrounded by dancers performing high-energy and synchronized choreography while the camera pans to fans screaming and dancing along. Viewers at home can see why Bad Bunny’s fans call this the concert of the summer.
As if his exceptional performance wasn’t enough, the “Moscow Mule” singer took home four awards for Song of the Summer, Latin Video, and Album of the Year.
The greatest honor occurred right after his performance when LA Laker Carmelo Anthony stepped out on the stage to present Bad Bunny with the Artist of the Year award. Bad Bunny makes history as the first Latin male to receive the honor, making it all the more special. The Puerto Rican native accepted the award in Spanish and stated, “I always knew from the start that I could become the biggest stars without having to change my culture or my language.”
Before getting back to his concert, he ended with, “Yo soy Benito Antonio Martínez, de Puerto Rico para el mundo entero.” (“I’m Benito Antonio Martinez. From Puerto Rico to the entire world.”)
