The story is set during World War I and follows the life of a German soldier, Paul Baumer, who is fighting the war in Germany. Baumer is a civilian who becomes inspired by a speech and quits school to join the battle, without any experience or what to expect. It showcases his journey of fighting in the war, forming a camaraderie with fellow troops as they face injuries, death, hardships, and a lifetime of trauma.

The movie’s announcement came in last year on May 4. It is directed by Edward Berger and produced by Malte Grunert under the Amusement Park Films. However, this is not the first adaptation of the movie. There have been two previous film adaptions based on the novel. The adaptation released in 1930, received an Academy Award for Outstanding Production.

What sets Netflix’s upcoming adaptation apart from previous movies is that its set in the German language and has been shot in the Czech Republic.

The movie also features an all German cast including: Albrecht Schuch, Aaron Hilmer, and Edin Hasanovic, Adrian Grunewald, Thibault de Montalembert, and Devid Striesow.

The movie doesn’t come out on Netflix until October 28, but fans can watch the teaser for the historical film below. In the meantime, book lovers can order the book online at Amazon and educate themselves on the WW I narrative.
