On Monday, a state-funeral service for Queen Elizabeth II was held at Westminster Abbey in London. Meghan Markle arrived in a black cape dress with dainty pearl earrings gifted to her by the Queen. She attended the funeral with her husband, Prince Harry, who wore a black mourning suit to honor his late grandmother.

Meghan paid her respects to the late monarch with a pair of sentimental pearl-and-diamond drop earrings. According to People, the Queen gifted them to Meghan after their first solo outing in 2018. The earrings are a smaller version of Queen Mary’s button earrings that she wore almost every day.

Meghan’s sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, has been wearing a plethora of pearl jewelry from the Queen’s personal collection within these past few weeks to honor her majesty. Pearls are seen as a symbol of tears and purity and are traditionally worn by royals during times of mourning. Hello! Magazine stated, “This tradition has been continued for many years, with pearls continually being worn by royal ladies when attending funerals. The late Queen Elizabeth herself wore pearls to Princess Diana, Princess Margaret, and King George VI’s funerals over the years.”

Meghan also wore these pearls last Wednesday to a service honoring the Queen as her coffin was transported from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey.

The black dress was paired with Meghan’s pearl earrings is one we have seen before. The dress, designed by Stella McCarthy, was initially worn in navy at the Queen’s 92nd birthday concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall in April 2018.

Mrs. Markle’s outfit was topped off with a black floppy hat from Stephen Jones for Dior. We have seen this hat previously in white during Queen Elizabeth’s final Platinum Jubilee celebration. The look was finished with classic black pumps, black gloves, and a Cartier LOVE bracelet in yellow gold.

Harry and Meghan stepped away from the royal family as they relocated their immediate family to California in 2020. They recently returned to the U.K. for the One Young World Summit. Since the Queen’s death, however, they have been spotted numerous times with the royal family, paying their respects to the Queen.
