Meghan Trainor is shedding light on the stress of being a new mom. In an exclusive interview with Romper, Trainor opened up about her pregnancy with her child.

Before becoming a mom, Trainor released four studio albums. Her fifth, titled Takin’ It Back, will be released this year. Her new album and its singles are her first musical projects since her child was born.

The musician’s son, Riley, was born in February of last year. Her husband, actor Daryl Sabara (Spy Kids) stood by her side as she went into labor. After his birth, Riley had a short stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for some breathing issues. Thankfully, the couple was able to bring him home after five days. Trainor explained how the baby was not waking up to be fed and how the nurses blamed her for taking antidepressants during her pregnancy.

In her interview, Trainor states, “They kept asking me if I was on antidepressants during the pregnancy, and I was, but on the lowest dose possible, and all my doctors said it was safe and wouldn’t affect him.” Trainor, who has been open about her struggles with anxiety and depression, felt discouraged by these accusations.

Earlier in the interview, Trainor talked about her desire to have more children with Sabara. She explains she “wants at least three, if not four.” The pop star also follows up these wishes with concerns about her children’s safety in the future.

“I want to hire a preschool teacher that will be able to teach emotions,” Trainor discussed. This desire for homeschooling comes from Trainor’s fears about gun violence in schools.

She stated, “And not to get dark here, but [in regular schools, you have to worry about] guns and all that stuff. I don’t really want to send my kids somewhere where I’m just like, ‘Hope to see you later!’ It’s horrible. Horrible.”

As a parent, Trainor wants to protect her children from any harm. She claps back at skeptics who claim she “can’t keep her kid in a bubble,” declaring “oh but I can.”

Trainor finishes the interview on a positive note stating, “with Riley, life has only gotten better.”
