Charcuterie boards have been around for years. They’re trendy, delicious, and can be made with the assistance of a simple DIY video. Although very Pinterest-friendly, charcuterie boards can be more on the expensive side. In an attempt to find a cheaper alternative, chefs on social media such as Justine Doiron, are popularizing butter boards.

This newly viral appetizer consists of a ton of melted butter on top of a board of the chef’s choice. Toppings are endless, ranging from honey to edible flowers to just salt and pepper. Whoever is sharing the dish then uses warm bread to dig in.

Charcuterie boards, while great dishes, can be quite pricey. Whether pre-prepared or the ingredients are purchased separately and assembled, they often range from $30 to $100. An average full-sized charcuterie tray from Wegmans is $32. Butter boards, however, can often be made with kitchen staples already at home.

Butter boards started to gain social media traction in mid-September. Brooklyn-based cook Justine Doiron, whose recipe videos are popular on TikTok, posted a short video of her making a board. She credits the idea to cookbook author Joshua McFadden. Doiron’s TikTok has since received over eight million views.

A simple search on TikTok or Instagram can now bring up thousands of ideas for making a butter board. There are entire accounts made up of aesthetically pleasing pictures of different boards.

A butter board is a perfect appetizer for a cozy fall get-together. To learn how to put a board together, Doiron’s tutorial on her blog is linked here.
