Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara Cast in New Film The Island
Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara are reuniting on-screen for the first time since 2018’s Mary Magdalene. The actors are slated to star in Pawel Pawlikowski’s dramatic thriller, The Island.
Pawlikowski’s upcoming project, The Island, will be based on a true story. The film “follows an attractive American 1930s couple who turn their back on civilization to build their own private paradise on a deserted island and live off the land.” In a twisted turn of events, a millionaire suddenly makes the couple into a sensation with the tabloids.
Apart from the couple, the thriller also follows a countess who has plans with her two lovers to take over the island and build her own hotel. In addition, “psychological warfare ensues as seduction and jealousy descend into sexual infidelity, betrayal, and eventually murder—at exactly the same time, nature turns against these island interlopers.”

Filmation’s CEO Glen Basner reveals of the filmmaker, “Pawel Pawlikowski is one of the world’s greatest filmmakers working today. Pawel bringing this story of jealousy, betrayal, and murder in a Garden of Eden is exactly what we all need to drive audiences back to the cinema.”

This is not the first time Phoenix and Mara have worked together. The duo met in Spike Jonze’s 2013 film, Her, with Mara cast as his ex-wife, Catherine. The actors also shared the screen twice in 2018: Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot and Mary Magdalene. The Carol actress embodied the titular role, with Phoenix taking on the role of Jesus.
