Midnights has been described as one of Taylor Swift’s most experimental albums, featuring R&B themes, alternative synths, pop, electronica, vintage synthesizers, and more.

In a Twitter post, Swift listed her collaborators who worked on the album. She writes, “We were so lucky to also work with @sam_dew, @sounwave, Lana Del Rey, @Jahaansweet, @thekeanubeats, William Bowery, and @ZoeKravitz. @Sharp_Stick was our excellent engineer.”

Kravitz is well known for her roles in X-Men: First Class, Mad Max: Fury Road, and her recent film, The Batman. However, Zöe Kravitz is no stranger to creating music. She is a member of a band called LOLAWOLF, which features R&B and electro-synth-pop sounds. She sings alongside Jimmy Giannopoulous, the band’s drummer and producer. Together the duo has released two studio albums, Calm Down and Tenderness.

Nevertheless, the Divergent actress surprised fans with her songwriting credits in the new Midnights album.

Kravitz is listed as a collaborator on “Lavender Haze,” a track with dreamy synth sounds and addicting pop rhythms. Swift has teased the song’s title by revealing its true meaning in an Instagram post. She first heard “Lavender Haze” in the American period drama Mad Men, which is the ‘50s term for “being in love.” She states that when you’re in the Lavender Haze, “you’ll do anything to stay there and not let people bring you down off of that cloud.”

While not much is known about Kravitz’s role in “Lavender Haze,” we can unravel her songwriting influences through her previous albums. The Batman star mentioned her fondness for love songs in a 2014 Vice interview. She claims many of her lyrics “have to do with relationships—with friends, lovers. It’s becoming a diary of sorts for me so it’s usually about what I’m going through at the time.”

During her time in LOLAWOLF, Kravitz revealed that she would write their lyrics independently, using her songs to reflect on her life. Just as Kravitz used her songs introspectively, Swift also used her music as a journal for her struggles in life and romances. Although Kravitz and Swift delved into opposite genres, they both have experience writing love songs.

Kravitz is also featured on another one of Midnights tracks, “Karma.” This track’s name went viral on Twitter once it was revealed on Taylor’s TikTok series, “Midnights Mayhem With Me.” Karma is a recurring theme in her hit singles, such as her outspoken comeback “Look What You Made Me Do” from Reputation and 1989‘s “Bad Blood.”

However, Swift personifies “Karma” as an omnipresent being in this new track. In the chorus, she declares, ” ‘Cause karma is my boyfriend/ Karma is a god/ Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend/ Karma’s a relaxing thought.” In her own words, she proclaims karma is everywhere and it is inevitable.

The pop star also collaborated with other artists on Midnights. Taylor Swift listed Jack Antonoff as a songwriter and producer on the album. The duo wrote 11 of the 13 tracks on Midnights. On the “Sweet Nothing” track, Joe Alwyn is affectionately credited with his pseudonym, William Bowery. Furthermore, Lana Del Rey’s vocals are showcased in the album’s fourth track, “Snow on the Beach,” which describes love as a magical wintery dream.

Zöe Kravitz’s influence on these two songs is revealed through the songs’ experimental synths and choruses. Fans are pleasantly surprised at Kravitz’s involvement in the critically acclaimed album.
