Mariah Carey Talks Life, Career, and Love for Her Family
Christmas is right around the corner, which means Mariah Carey is back. In an exclusive interview, Carey talks about her past struggles in life and her love for her children.
Mariah Carey is a record-breaker. She is currently the only artist to have had a No.1 Single in the past four decades. With over 145 million albums sold, she is one of the most successful musicians of all time. She has had 19 songs top the Billboards Hot 100, more than any solo artist in history.
The iconic songstress, who famously has a five-octave vocal range, has hit singles for days, including “We belong together” and “Don’t Forget About Us,” but her most popular track is the 1994 release of “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” According to Billboard, the hit single has returned to the Hot 100 and has risen to the No. 5 spot after dominating the charts for 28 years.

However, things were not always so glamorous. Early into her career, Carey struggled to gain control of her artistry in an unfavorable record label contract under her ex-husband, music mogul, Tommy Mottola. “There are things people are not aware of, because this whole quote-unquote ‘diva’ thing is always what people see first,” she comments. Regaining control of her life and passions within a male-dominated field is only one chapter of her success story.
In an interview with W Magazine, Carey details the difficulties of growing up biracial in a predominantly white neighborhood and severe substance abuse among her siblings. “There were no role models for people who were clearly mixed,” she continued, “so I didn’t know who to look up to when I was growing up. It was difficult.” Despite having a strenuous upbringing, Carey has taken her experiences growing up and poured everything into her music and her family.
Mariah Carey has set the bar so high and that’s why she gets hate. Not only she literally owned the ’90s and ’00s with her selfwritten music and records but she managed to create a christmas EMPIRE in the new era which is difficult to get the way she has managed to do.

Things have only gone up for Carey as she strived to give herself and her children the best life possible. Still, there’s a particular emphasis on Christmas. When asked if her daughters know their mother is “more iconic than Santa Claus,” Carey bursts with energy, exclaiming her love for the holidays. She declares “Darling, look, I know a lot of the time people are like, ‘Oh, yay! Look at her! She’s, like, so festive and such a Christmas girl,’ or whatever. But, really, Christmas makes me happy.”
“When you grow up with a messed up life and then you’re able to have this transformation where you can make your life what you want it to be,” she states, “That is joy to me. That’s why I want my kids to have everything they can have.” She wants her children to believe they can be anything they dream of becoming.
Mariah Carey has also delved into her identity and roots in The Christmas Princess, a book by Mariah Carey and Michaela Angela Davis. The story follows a poor mixed-race girl in a fairytale about realizing self-love is the greatest gift of all.
