After acknowledging his work in Tarantino’s film, Butler took the time to admire the direction of Baz Luhrmann, the iconic filmmaker behind the masterpiece that is Elvis. Butler thanked Denzel Washington for helping him land the role of a lifetime. Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth) called Luhrmann to express Butler’s commitment to his work. The filmmaker stated, “And he [Washington] said, “I’ve just worked with this guy on stage. I’ve never seen a work ethic like it.” And I’m like, “Okay, I must see him.” Honestly, I put him through the wringer, but he lived Elvis. What he’s managed to do is not do an impersonation, but to live Elvis, to the extent that he’s humanized him.”
