First Look at Donald Glover’s New Series Swarm
It’s true what they say when one door closes, another one opens. Donald Glover’s newest series, Swarm, is underway, and fans couldn’t be more excited.
Glover’s hit series, Atlanta, recently ended after four seasons, but fans won’t have to wait long to see more of his work. Here’s everything you need to know about Donald Glover’s newest series, Swarm. Co-creator and showrunner of the Beyoncé-inspired series, Janine Nabors, describes Swarm as “a sister to Atlanta.” The series will star some of today’s biggest stars, including Snowfall star Damson Idris, “Have Mercy” artist Chloe Bailey, Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah), and many more.
It’s no secret the BeyHive is one of the strongest, most loyal fanbases ever. We’re in the era of intense obsessive stardom, so the series couldn’t have come at a better time, and who better to write the series than Donald Glover himself, aka Childish Gambino. Malia Obama surprises us by joining the writer’s table to help add some youthful energy to the script.

Dominique Fishback will portray Dre, a young woman with an unhealthy obsession with a fictional pop star, who has similar attributes to the one and only Beyoncé Knowles. The series will take a deep dive into Dre’s life and the places her dangerous fandom takes her. Chloe Bailey will embody Dre’s sister, Marissa, and Damson Idris will star as Bailey’s boyfriend.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Nabers details how the series’ concept came about: “We were really interested in creating an antihero story.” She states that she took inspiration from television’s most iconic antiheroes such as mob boss Tony Soprano, and Mad Men‘s Don Draper. While Swarm enters dark territory, she also explains that its tone is not that far from Glover’s Atlanta.
In addition, Glover also mentions that the series was influenced by Micheal Haneke’s The Piano Teacher and Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy. Both films are overwhelmed with themes of obsession and dread. However, Swarm takes a modern approach to the fan-obsessed narrative by being based on the maniacal side of Beyoncé’s fandom.
