Melanie Martinez Is Back and Better Than Ever
Melanie Martinez makes her long-awaited return with teaser videos, song snippets, and gorgeous visuals.
The “Play Date” singer wiped her Instagram clean this past weekend to tease new upcoming music. She posted videos and images showcasing her new visual aesthetic and snippets of her new songs.
On February 18, Martinez shared a video of a mushroom surrounded by candles. The video slowly zooms into the mushroom’s stem, which has “RIP CRYBABY” etched onto it. Somber music plays while the songstress declares, “They’re carving my name in the grave again/ The flowers are fresh and their faces wet/ My body has died but I’m still alive/ Look over your shoulder, I’m back from the dead.”
It ends with Martinez repeating, “I’m back from the dead/ Back from the dead.” The second slide of the post includes what appears to be a pink ceramic butterfly, which can only be presumed to be a promotional photo for the musical project.
On February 19, Martinez shared another video showing what appears to be an atomic nucleus with red veins growing out of it. As it plays, she sings, “Twisted all my limbs for you/ Two of them in knots and two of them in loops.” The second slide of this particular post includes what appear to be several sperm cells. The caption of the post reads, “the nucleus of creation.”
Following back-to-back posts, Martinez shared a third video on February 20. In this video, the camera zooms out from what seems to be a pink alien-like creature. Slow guitar music plays while Martinez serenades, “You are the light I’ve been searchin’ for forever/ Feels like, man, I’ve really never felt the rain/ Buried in the desert, didn’t think I’d push through the dirt/ You just cleansed me like a waterfall, you came/ I’m screamin’ like a kettle on the stove.”
The accompanying photo is similarly eerie to the rest, displaying what looks like pink tentacles in a cave. The caption reads, “Developing….”
On February 21, a fourth video was shared. This one shows what seems to be a humanoid creature trying to break out of an egg while upbeat music plays. The caption reads, “Incubating….”
The posts mark Martinez’s first visual and musical releases since her last EP, After School (2020). Martinez is acclaimed and known for her visual and musical identity. While her previous works tackled topics by referencing her childhood and school experience, the new posts shared suggest she is moving in a different direction.
