Melanie Martinez to Release New Album March 31
Melanie Martinez will release her new album Portals on all streaming platforms on Friday, March 31.
Melanie Martinez has finally made her return after four years. She stated in a press release, “Portals screams death is life is death is life is death is life. A continuous loop. A circle.”
This is her third studio album, following K-12 in 2020, Crybaby in 2015, and Dollhouse in 2014. She released the single “…” on February 17 with an all-black cover photo. Her single “…” is a 12-second snippet of Martinez repeating the words “Back from the dead. I’m back from the dead,” and then whispering, “I’m back!”
Martinez first got her claim to fame as a finalist on Season 3 of The Voice. She then signed a record deal with Atlantic Records in April 2014 and released Dollhouse the next month.
Fans are excited about the Alice-in-Wonderland vibe of the album cover art, suggesting a large jump from her Crybaby and K-12 era. The cover depicts Melanie Martinez transformed into a figure covered with mushrooms and “Portals” spelled out across the bottom.

Crybaby is a reference to Martinez’s younger self. She stated, “Cry Baby is a character that is based off of myself when I was younger. I got picked on for taking things very personally and being overly emotional. I was never afraid to express emotion and over the years I realized that it is a strength being this in touch with your feelings. A lot of people can’t go that deep so I wanted to bring life into this character that is this nickname that I got called when I was a kid that was supposed to be an insult but I wanted to turn it into a compliment.”
Martinez has redone her entire Instagram to fit the theme of Portals. She officially announced the release on February 22 with this video:
The rest of the art surrounding Portals on her Instagram suggests an extraterrestrial theme, a stark contrast to her younger-themed albums.
Portals can be streamed on all platforms on March 31.
