Annually, the Oscars recognize actors and filmmakers who have passed away with a televised In Memoriam segment. This year, the tribute was introduced by John Travolta, who teared up while remembering his Grease co-star Olivia Newton-John.

The segment is a touching way to remember the people who have brought joy to millions. However, the choice of who to include often sparks online debate.

This year, viewers were upset about the omission of stars Anne Heche, Charlbi Dean, and Paul Sorvino. In addition, Leslie Jordan, Gilbert Gottfried, Tom Sizemore, and Cindy Williams were also not included in the televised tribute. However, these actors were honored in the Oscars site “In Memoriam” section.

Fans were particularly outraged by the lack of inclusion of Charlbi Dean Kriek, the star of Best Picture nominee, Triangle of Sadness. Dean died in August at age 32 in New York City. Her cause of death was bacterial sepsis, linked to the removal of her spleen after a car accident. This news came just months after the film won the prestigious Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Triangle of Sadness director Ruben Östlund wrote on Instagram after her death, “It is an honor to have gotten to know and work with her.” Those who knew Dean and those who were fans of her work were saddened and shocked by the star’s sudden passing.

Dean’s role in the hit film was significant, making fans even more confused as to why the Oscars failed to recognize her. They did not hold back in their criticisms of The Academy on Twitter.

Those at the party for Triangle of Sadness distributor Neon were also shocked by Dean’s absence in the segment. This was revealed by Washington Post reporter Jada Yuan.

Despite Dean’s exclusion, fans have made it clear that the star’s legacy will continue to live on. To watch the award-winning film, Triangle of Sadness is streaming on Hulu.
