A League of Their Own Set for Short Final Season
The new A League of Their Own series has received great praise for its representation. However, this series is coming to end after the next season with a shortened season.
On March 14, Prime Video announced that the comedy reboot’s next season would be the last. The first season was a full eight episodes. However, the next season will be an abridged four-episode season. There is no current release date or when filming begins for the second season.
A League of Their Own only getting four more episodes is better than nothing, but it’s still pretty disappointing. And honestly… super weird?

The series is based on the classic 1992 film of the same name and is also based on the actual baseball team and league. A League of Their Own centers around the Rockford Peaches. The Peaches are a female baseball team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The film is highly regarded in the film industry. It also has the famous line, “There’s no crying in baseball!” from lead Tom Hanks. The impact of this film led to the series. While this is the basis for the film and the series, their plot lines and characters differ.

The television series focuses on Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson), a housewife who decides to step out of her shell and play baseball. She learns more about herself and her sexuality with the help of player Greta Gill (D’Arcy Carden). Also, the series focuses on Maxine Chapman (Chante Adams), who faces discrimination being a black woman trying to play baseball. She is also hiding the fact that she’s a lesbian. Furthermore, along with these main characters, many other women on the baseball team have notable stories.

Along with starring in the A League of Their Own series, Jacobson is also one of the co-creators and directed a few episodes of the first season. Originally, Jacobson got her big break with the comedy series Broad City, another series where she was the star and co-creator. Jacobson devised the idea for A League of Their Own series with Mozart in the Jungle showrunner Will Graham. Based on her love for the film, Jacobson wanted to expand the team’s stories and deal with more progressive and deeper topics. That led to the series getting the green light in 2020. The first season came out on August 12, 2022, on Prime Video.

The first A League of Their Own season received mostly mixed to positive reviews. Critics have applauded the series for its combination of humor and heart. It is a very progressive program that provides characters that can create a connection with the audience. It is currently a nominee for Best New Series at the GLAAD awards, which celebrate the best in LGBT entertainment. In addition, the lead and supporting performances of A League of Their Own have had a lot of praise. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a 94% fresh score. On Metacritic, the series has a score of 70. Therefore, there are indicators that this television program has great reception.

The announcement of A League of Their Own ending has upset many fans. Specifically, it has upset the LGBT fans of the series who want representation. The fact that a series with positive representation is ending after two seasons, with the second season cut in half, gives the impression that society does not want to highlight diverse stories. This goes back to the “bury your gays” trope that is a trend in media. That comes from the fact that there is not much LGBT representation in Hollywood. Therefore, a lot of the representation ends in death or cancellation. Hopefully, the support of the fans can bring this series back in the future, or at least something similar in spirit.
