Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel to Star in New A24 Film
On March 21, news broke that the actresses Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel will star together in a new A24 film, Mother Mary.
According to sources, the film will follow a fictional musician and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer. Hathaway will portray the musician, and Coel will portray the fashion designer. David Lowry will direct the film. This marks his third directed A24 film- the first being The Green Knight (2021) and A Ghost Story (2017).

Both Hathaway and Coel have received rave reviews in recent years for their work. Hathaway’s most recent film, Eileen (2023), premiered at Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim. In a review, The Hollywood Reporter critic, David Rooney, remarked, “Exuding worldly confidence from every perfect pore, Hathaway is at her most commanding in this role.” Furthermore, Hathaway has two more films already in post-production: Mothers’ Instinct (which will also star Jessica Chastain) and The Idea of You.
Coel has received immense success for her recent limited television series, I May Destroy You (2020). For her work, she became the first Black woman to win an Emmy for Oustanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series. Recently, she made an appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).
Additionally, it was announced Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX would produce the film’s music, with Daniel Hart producing an original, new score. Antonoff is known for his musical production work; he consistently collaborates with artists like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Lorde. As of late, he co-wrote and co-produced Del Rey’s new song “A&W,” which he remarked as “his favorite song he’s “ever done” with Del Rey.” Charli XCX released her fifth studio album Crash (2021) to positive reviews and recently starred with Rina Sawayama for their single, “Beg For You.”
