Disney+ Shares New Character Posters for Peter Pan & Wendy
There is just one more month until the premiere of Peter Pan & Wendy on Disney+, and exciting new character posters have just been released.
The highly anticipated live-action remake of the Disney classic boasts an impressive cast. The stars include Alexander Molony (The Reluctant Landlord ) as Peter Pan, Ever Anderson (Black Widow) as Wendy Darling, Yara Shahidi (Black-ish) as Tinker Bell, and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore) as the villainous Captain Hook.
Furthermore, the supporting cast includes Alyssa Wapanatâhk (Rehab), Joshua Pickering (A Discovery of Witches), Jacobi Jupe (Cupid), Molly Parker (Essex County), Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), and Jim Gaffigan (Rick and Morty). The film is directed by David Lowery, and produced by Jim Whitaker.
The story of Peter Pan has been recreated over many years. Originally a novel by J.M. Barry, the story became Disney’s animated classic in 1953.
Peter Pan & Wendy follows Wendy Darling and Peter Pan on a journey to Neverland. Accompanied by her brothers and Peter Pan’s fairy friend, Tinker Bell, Wendy embarks on a dangerous, life-changing adventure. While it sticks to the plot people know and love, the movie will also revamp the timeless story.
One way Disney is choosing to reimagine the classic is by creating an intentional and inclusive cast. Last month, the official trailer for Peter Pan & Wendy premiered, showcasing some very specific changes.
The iconic Lost Boys now also include girls. Additionally, the historically controversial character, Tiger Lily, is embodied by Alyssa Wapanatâhk, a member of the Cree nation. Wapanatâhk has served as a guiding force in ensuring that her culture is portrayed accurately and respectfully in the film.
The movie also features Yara Shahidi as the first Black woman to star as Tinker Bell. Disney received backlash for this casting, but Shahidi recently defended the choice stating, “They wanted to bring some new fun to this classic but also give us the fairy tale we deserve. It’s evident they’re not just popping Black and Brown folks in the cast for the sake of updating the story. Instead, it’s about creating a story that so many more people can see themselves in after we’ve been left out for so long.”
Amidst the controversy, there is also overwhelming excitement for the new film as its release approaches. Peter Pan & Wendy premieres on April 28 on Disney+, and will surely be an epic adventure. Fans can watch the magical trailer down below.
