Quinta Brunson made her Saturday Night Live debut this weekend. Brunson used her monologue to uplift teachers and highlight their importance.

Brunson has become one of the internet’s most beloved stars through her work on Abbott Elementary. Brunson is the ABC sitcom’s creator, star, co-writer, and executive producer. The sitcom has garnered critical acclaim, following the story about teachers in an underfunded Philadelphia school. The series is both entertaining and real, depicting issues in public schools.

Brunson recently made an appearance on Saturday Night Live where she used the spotlight to advocate for teachers. Brunson grew up in Philadelphia, where her mom was a school teacher. She shared that because of this background, “creating a show about teachers has been really special.”

The star went on to explain, “my mom really was an amazing teacher, and I’m so proud of her. But I also know firsthand that teachers get taken for granted.” Brunson went on to surprise her mother with a video message from Barack Obama.

Bruson noted how parents took teachers’ jobs for granted before the pandemic, where they had to take on the role of the teacher from home. Brunson jokingly compared the situation to taking her dishwasher for granted before moving into an apartment without one. Brunson joked, “Suddenly parents were like, wait, we have to teach these dishes now? We have to feed these dishes now? Why did I have so many dishes? That last dish was a mistake.”

Despite the jokes, Brunson made her point clear emphasizing, “seriously, teachers are people, not appliances, so please, remember how important teachers are, acknowledge the work they do every day.” She concluded, “for the love of God, pay them the money they deserve.”

This is not the first time Abbott Elementary has used its acclaim for good. In their first season, the sitcom’s production team and ABC donated a portion of their budget for marketing to teachers. The television series continues to donate to schools, partnering with organizations like DonorsChoose to support teachers in need.

Abbott Elementary is still airing its second season, with the next episode airing on April 5. To catch up, stream the series on Hulu.
