New Photos of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux Just Dropped
New photos of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn dropped just as filming for the highly anticipated Joker sequel officially wrapped.
The sequel’s director, Todd Phillips, reported filming for Joker: Folie à Deux wrapped in an Instagram post. The post featured new photos of Gaga as Harley Quinn and Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. In the caption, Phillips thanked the two actors and the film’s entire cast and crew for their hard work throughout the past four months. He concluded his post by joking, “Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together.”
In the first photo, Gaga sports short white hair with dark, messy eye makeup and smeared red lipstick. She stares fiercely into the camera, her sharp gaze contrasting her rather disheveled appearance. The second photo depicts Phoenix in his haunting Joker makeup, slumped over with wide, crazy eyes. The images have an eerie quality consistent with the intense, cerebral tone of the first movie.
Phillips first announced the sequel to the Oscar-nominated film last June, and Warner Bros. confirmed its production in August. Phillips returned as the project’s director, bringing to life the screenplay he co-wrote with Scott Silver. Filming for the highly anticipated movie began in Los Angeles last December, increasing the already overwhelming enthusiasm amongst fans.
Phillips’ original Joker debuted in 2019 and became the sixth highest-grossing film of the year. The psychological thriller received 11 Oscar nominations, and Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his poignant portrayal of Arthur Fleck, otherwise known as Batman’s nemesis, the Joker. In addition to its critical acclaim, the movie quickly gained a cult following that has only grown since news of the sequel broke.
From the limited information that has been released, Joker: Folie à Deux promises to exceed the expectations set by its antecedent. The addition of the award-winning actress, Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn greatly contributed to the initial buzz around the new movie. Fans can’t wait to see Gaga channel the iconic character alongside Phoenix’s maniacal, twisted Joker.
