This means the film has beaten Warcraft‘s $210 million opening for the video game adaptation record and Frozen‘s $358 million opening for the animated film opening record. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has now reached the biggest opening of the year, moving Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to second place.

The film features Mario, voiced by Chris Pratt, and Luigi, voiced by Charlie Day, falling into a pipe that transforms their surroundings into the beloved world of Nintendo.

The plot begins in Brooklyn, where Mario and Luigi run a failing plumbing business frowned upon by their family. When they fall into the new world, they finally have the chance to become heroes.

Polls said that 59% of the audience so far was male and 45% were between 18 and 34. Part of the reason for the film’s success is due to the wide range of references to the video games. Easter eggs were dropped throughout the entire film, whether it be the music, the Mario Kart scene, or the books in Mario and Luigi’s home. The references enhanced the nostalgia that made the film appealing to the older generation and the visuals and story were just as vibrant to the younger generation.

Aside from Pratt and Day, the film boasted a star-studded cast of voice actors. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Peach, Jack Black voices Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key embodies Toad, and Seth Rogan is Donkey Kong. Charles Martinet, the traditional voice actor for Mario and Luigi in the video games, voices their dad in the film.

Despite the mixed reviews from critics, this film has proven to be a fan favorite, so watch it while it’s still in theaters. Fans can purchase tickets here.
